Exploring the World of Digital Art & Design

Monday - Friday, March 29 - April 2, 2010, 9:00am- 3:30pm 

Course Overview:

Get ready for a week of digital art and design that will change the way you look at popular arts and media.  Workshop instructor Scott Flanders is a freelance illustrator and artist specializing in entertainment art and media including commercial illustration, comic books and conceptual design for film and video games, Scott brings an exciting and contemporary professional approach to digital art and a deep knowledge rooted in the fundamentals of fine art training that will leave participants inspired to stretch their creative muscles and push the boundaries of visual expression!

Students will be exposed to many of the basic techniques and common approaches to digital art and design, including the familiar skills of drawing, painting and composition as synthesized through the digital medium, but also silhouette and contour design, using abstraction in development, and using photographic reference and the basics of image sampling.

At the end of these exciting intensive workshops, students can expect to have generated their very own original works of art and design and will be well on their way to developing their skills as a contemporary designer/illustrator with an enhanced working knowledge of digital art creation software.

What you can expect from this workshop:

  • Patient knowledgeable instruction, and genuine interest in your growth as an artist.
  • In depth tutorials and attention to the exciting techniques and processes being covered.
  • Increased knowledge of digital art making tools and software, (Photoshop, GIMP, etc.)
  • An original print to take home at the end of every workshop session, created entirely by you!
  • A whole lot of fun and bit of a challenge too!

Five days of intense, fun workshops will include patient detailed instruction on the basics of digital art as it applies to the fields of Graphic Design, Conceptual/Development Art, Illustration and Comic Books.

All workshops will be using Adobe Photoshop extensively.

Following is a list of the workshop events including a summary of the themes, tools and techniques that will be covered:

 

Monday, March 29, 2010 -"Feel the Music" in Digital Art & Design:  Bands and Billboards! (Advertisement) 

Participants will be introduced to various tools and techniques used by industry professionals in the fields of graphic design and photography to create an advertisement or band poster with a special focus on the fundamentals of visual communication design, basic typography, and composition. 

Tuesday – Wednesday, March 30 – 31, 2010 - "Creative Concepts" in Digital Art & Design: Character/Creature Design!  (Entertainment) 

Do you want to create your own characters and worlds?  Do you dream of being a part of a team of creative professionals working on creating the next generation of amazing films and video games?  If so, then this workshop is for you.  Participants will be introduced to many of the basic techniques of digital art used by today’s leading character designers/artists in the entertainment industry, specifically for use in film, television, video games, children's publications and comic books.  This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of character/creature design.

Thursday, April 1, 2010 - "Full Color Heroes" in Digital Art & Design: Comic Book Coloring!  (Comics/Graphic Novels) 

Have you ever wondered how they keep all those colors in the lines?  Comic coloring is a incredibly useful skill the techniques of which can be applied to digital illustration and graphic design in endless ways to give artists and designers incredible control of color, composition and overall presentation

Friday, April 2, 2010 - "Just Be You" in Digital Art & Design: Celebrating a Diversity Digital Collage! (Graphic Design) 

To round out the week's exciting activities students will be asked to create a digital collage that will serve as a visual representation of their individuality including their concept of personal identity, cultural diversity, interests, and goals for the future.  This workshop session will focus on integrating all of the tools and techniques covered throughout the week to create something that is visually unique and meaningful to the participant.

Prerequisites:

-       Must be a current middle or high school student

-       Minimum level of art experience is requested.

-       Interested in art, graphics, and/or animation

-       Careful and patient enough to learn some new skills and listen to expert coaching

Course fee: $195.00. Registration deadline: March 15, 2010. Space is limited to 19 participants.

All workshops held at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC San Diego.
