Space Still Available: TeacherTECH Science Series - Earthquakes: Teaching Tools Beyond Static Images and Flat Maps
Elementary School, Middle School, High School, Community College and Continuing Education Educators are invited to attend our February TeacherTECH Science Series in collaboration with Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UCSD-TV. The workshop is focused on earthquakes and the use of new technology tools in the classroom.

University of California, San Diego
Workshop Description
To harness the interest and tap into the imagination of Earth Science students in today's technology driven world requires more than basic 2-D maps. Effectively engaging today's students requires the incorporation of real-time data, synergistic learning tools and multidimensional interactive visualization products. In this seismology-focused workshop, we will provide you with ways to make your Earth Science curriculum exciting to even "that student."
You will learn: (1) The basics of seismology; (2) Where to access real-time data and information about earthquakes; and (3) How to interactively explore multidimensional seismic data. The first part of the class will be in a lecture format using a PowerPoint presentation. This presentation will be accessible to class participants and includes an introduction to various web-based resources that can be directly used in the classroom. The second part of the class will focus on using the 4-D interactive freeware iView3D that allows one to interactively explore multi-dimensional data.
Topics include but are not limited to:
* Web-based teaching tools
* P-wave and S-wave identification
* Earthquake trilateration (location)
* Earthquake magnitude determination
* Plat tectonics
* Visualization teaching tools
* Current open questions in seismology
Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Dr. Debi Kilb, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Please note that this workshop will be recorded for broadcast by UCSD-TV for nationwide distribution. All attendees will be asked to complete a UCSD Media Release Form.
Registration is free. Refreshments will be served. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.
