Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls

A Project of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) – California

Scholarships are available for current seventh grade girls to attend AAUW’s Tech Trek, an exciting, weeklong residential math, science and technology camp, this summer. Tech Trek began in 1998 and is now held on six different campuses in California. Tech Trek is a scholarship program and only girls who have been nominated by a teacher are eligible.  That’s why we are seeking your help in identifying qualified students.

All applicants must submit a nomination for scholarship from a math or science teacher or a letter of recommendation from a math or science teacher and have an endorsement from the local San Diego Branch.

The goals of Tech Trek Science Amp for Girls are to:

  1. Encourage a diverse group of young women entering eighth grade to take math and science courses each year though out high school.
  2. Motivate students to attend college.
  3. Inspire young women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering or math.

Each teacher may nominate a maximum of five (5) girls.  Your recommendations should be based on the suggestions below, as well as your evaluation of students during the first semester.

NOMINATED 7TH GRADE STUDENTS MUST:

  • Be excited by math or science
  • Have active listening skills
  • Should have at least a B-minus grade, does not need to be a top student.
  • Be likely to profit from this experience.
  • Have limited access to programs such as these

STUDENTS ACADEMIC HABITS

  • Shows an interest in learning new things, especially math or science
  • Follows directions carefully.
  • Participates in class discussions
  • Works well in group situations,  is willing to help all levels of students in the class
  • Shows patience and persistence in task completion

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • Cooperates with teachers and students
  • Shows respect for other students
  • Exhibits self control
  • Demonstrates responsibility
  • Has enough self-esteem to be willing to try a challenging task
  • Makes positive choices for herself, in and out of class

Space restrictions at camps, and the expense involved, will limit each AAUW branch to providing scholarships for only a few girls.  After the AAUW branch received your nominations, they will invite students to write an essay.  AAUW members will select several candidates for interviews and campers will be selected from that group.  Your cooperation in the nomination process is appreciated and you will be notified by the local branch of the final selection.

Please contact your local Tech Trek branch coordinator show below or the program coordinators for additional information of for an e-file of the nomination form.
