Reuben H. Fleet Science Center - Upcoming March Events
What: Exploring Ethics Lecture: “Who Owns the Data”
In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical perspective. What are the advantages and disadvantages of open access to scientific data? Most of us begin with the assumption that science and society will be best served by open exchange of information. However this may not always be the case. Is it possible that our interests are sometimes best served by secrecy? This Exploring Ethics forum will provide participants with a rare opportunity to consider both the arguments for open access to data and examples of concerns that such access might raise. Bring your own questions and join in the discussion!
Panelists:
Philip Bourne, PhD. Professor, Pharmacology and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, UC San Diego; Associate Director, Protein Data Bank; and Founding Editor-in-Chief of the open access journal PLoS Computational Biology
