What is the High School Student Research Program?

  • The High School Student Research Program, part of the Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI) was developed to help increase awareness of the life science industry and related field of research to students in the San Diego region.
  • Students are involved in an eight-week program, which includes one week of non-paid pre-internship “Boot Camp” training followed by a seven-week paid internship.
  • Students learn how to formulate and test hypotheses, prepare experiments, and draw conclusion from those experiments. In addition, students will develop scientific posters reflecting on their summer experience and highlighting their research and future career goals.

 

Requirements
  • Applicants must be San Diego County residents and have completed their most recent semester of high school at a public or private high school within San Diego County.
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before June 28, 2010
  • Applicants must have successfully completed at least one year each of high school level chemistry and biology.
  • Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicants must be able to commit to 40hrs/wk for the duration of the program.
  • Applicants under 18 must submit a work permit application (available from your high school career center)
