BE WiSE 2008–2009 Alumnae Workshops

June 28, 2008 –TIES at UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering workshop. Learn how to use probes as measuring devises. Learn about Ultra violet rays, pH in water, how to make a solar oven and more. (Grades 7-8). Photos

July 8 – August 9, 2007 – Young Women in Cancer Research Oncofertility Academy at UCSD Medical Center and Cancer Center. (Grades 10–12).

August 11–15 – Biotech Bootcamp at Miramar College. (Grades 10–12).

October 18, 2008 – Sharp Healthcare Human Patient Simulation Center at SDSU.   The  Simulation Center at SDSU School of Nursing houses 7 "patients".  During your visit to the Center, you will be able to interact with a hospitalized patient as if you were a nursing student.  Students take vital signs, give medications and even save lives.  (Grade 11)

October 25, 2008 –  A Walk in Florida Canyon and visit to San Diego Natural History Museum – learn about native plants.  Get to know your City present and past, get fresh air and healthy exercise, and benefit the environment! Come to beautiful Balboa Park to learn about San Diego’s native plants, take a healthy walk – 1.5 miles round trip, and help our environment by collecting any liter that we come across along the way.  (Grades 8, 9)

October 28, 2008 – The Science of Taste Workshop at Senomyx.  Learn about taste science and how Senomyx is using innovative biotech tools to discover new flavors for foods and beverages.  (Grades 11 – 12)

November 8, 2008 –  Find Out Who Done It!   With a  SeaWorld Education Specialist as we investigate the remains of a mysterious marine animal washed ashore along the San Diego coast.  During this forensic investigation we will uncover clues to the mystery animal's classification and potential causes of death." After the program you can stay and enjoy SeaWorld.  (Grades 8, 9)

November 12, 2008 –  Interview tips for College.  Learn how to show your best self during the College/Scholarship interview process. Understand the basics of interviewing and the unique opportunities presented by the College Interview.  (Grades 10 and 11 and parent(s) )

November 15, 2008 – Grossmont College will host a day on campus for BE WiSE Alumnae. Faculty from the biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and exercise science departments will guide girls through hands-on activities in their specialties.  (Grades 10, 11)

December 6, 2008 –  Paleoecology at Birch Aquarium. Do you know what paleoecology is?  Learn the secrets that scientists know from studying fossils from long ago at the Birch Aquarium and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  (Grades 8, 9)

December 13, 2008 –  Visit the Veterinary Hospital at Wild Animal Park.   Meet Dr. Nadine Lamberski, a veterinarian for the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park.  Join her for a tour of the Park's Harter Hospital and learn the challenges and rewards of treating exotic wildlife.   (Grades 11, 12)

January 24, 2009 –  “Have you always wanted to be an archaeologist? The San Diego Archaeological Center's Education Department will provide a sampling of archaeology-based learning experiences based on the nationally renowned Project Archaeology Program.  (grade 8)

January 31, 2009 – Veterinary Pathology at the San Diego County Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.  The ADDL welcomes BE WiSE girls interested in learning about the fascinating fields of veterinary pathology, microbiology, parasitology and PCR.  Not for the squeamish at heart, the day will have hands on experiences for those with inquiring minds wanting to learn more about how to investigate disease process. (Grades 10, 11)

February 21, 2009 –  Creating 3D Animation.   Girls will learn how easy it is to create interactive 2D and 3D animations without doing any programming. Girls will learn the same 3D modeling and animation tools used to make big budget Hollywood films and video games. They will build their own 3D virtual worlds then export and share them with each other and the rest of the world through the Google Earth 3D interface. They will also learn how these easy-to-use tools can be used for scientific research.   (Grades  8, 9)

February 28, 2009 – Expanding Your Horizons Conference at USD.  (Grades 8, 9, 10)

March 14, 2009 –  BE WiSE Botball Team at Southern CA Regional Botball Tournament at USD.

March 21, 2009 – Antarctic Ecosystems.    Brrr!  Remarkable creatures are found where winters are dark and conditions harsh.  We'll explore the organisms of Antarctic food webs and learn what makes them so productive. Students will conduct experiments on adaptations animals use to survive in an icy world,  examine plankton samples, learn about life on-board a research ship, and get updates from scientists on a research cruise investigating icebergs.  (Grades 10 – 12)

March 28, 2009 – How is an IPod made?  Have you ever wondered what makes gadgets like the iPod and Nintendo and thousands of other gadgets possible. When you visit Cymer, you will get a behind the scenes tour of our facilities and talk to female scientists about their career paths. Cymer, Inc. is based in Northern San Diego and is the world’s leading supplier of excimer laser light sources for today’s semiconductor marketplace.    (Grades 10, 11)
