BE WiSE 2007–2008 Alumnae Workshops

October 20, 2007 – “Elephants Secret Sense”. Caitlin O’Connell-Rodwell Ever wonder where the largest land mammals live, what they eat and how they behave?  Come and learn what it's like to be an elephant! After Ms.  O'Connor-Rodwell's presentation, the students will visit the Wild Animal Park's African elephant barn to view a herd of elephants that traveled from Swaziland to the Park in 2003 (Grades 8, 9) Photos

Octtober 29, 2007 – College night for 10th and 11th BE WiSE Alumnae and parents. A college admissions counselor will talk about the process, Financial Aid and other helpful information.

November 3, 2007 – Explore the natural history of.... energy!  Demonstrations and hands-on activities engage students in the world of energy. Where does energy come from?  How do we use it?  What are fossil fuels?  What will happen when we run out of fossil fuels? What other kinds of fuels are there?   You will learn this at the EcoCenter for Alternative Fuel [grade 8] Photos

November 17, 2007 – Grossmont College will host a day on campus for Be Wise Alumnae. Faculty from the biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and exercise science departments will guide girls through hands-on activities in their specialties.  (Grades 10, 11) Photos 1 Photos 2

November 17, 2007 – Let's think about Global Warming - what does this mean for you? All our habits have to change. This workshop is designed to learn what scientists know and don't yet know about Earth's climate.  We'll measure the effects of CO2 and see how it is rising. A variety of experiments will help you observe changes and help you think about future jobs. (Grade 8, 9)

December 1, 2007 – Explorations in Opto-Electronics at USD, Engineering Department How does light transmit sound through a glass cable?  How does your television work?  Come and learn that and more, such as how to use a laser. Lunch and a tour of the USD campus.  (Grade 8) Photos

January 26, 2008 – "Find out 'Who done it?' with SeaWorld Education Specialist Kris Shaw as we investigate the remains of a mysterious marine animal washed ashore along the San Diego coast.  During this forensic investigation we will uncover clues to the mystery animal's classification and potential causes of death." After the program you can stay and enjoy SeaWorld.  (Grades 8, 9) Photos

February 9 , 2008 – Have you ever wondered what makes gadgets like the iPod and Nintendo and thousands of other gadgets possible. When you visit Cymer, you will get a behind the scenes tour of our facilities and talk to female scientists about their career paths. Cymer, Inc. is based in Northern San Diego and is the world’s leading supplier of excimer laser light sources for today’s semiconductor marketplace. Clean Room Photos   Other Photos

February 2008 – BE WiSE Botball Robotics Team will start to build their “bots” For the March Competition.  (8, 9, 10 and returning 11th)

February 23, 2008 – In this workshop Amira Pharmaceuticals will carry out biochemical and molecular and cell  biological experiments that would be used in the development of new drugs in a pharmaceutical laboratory. (Grades 11) Photos   Other Photos

March 1, 2008 – Our Air Products chemists and engineers will demonstrate how we develop  the materials that are used in your laptop, iPod, cell phones, game stations – everything electronic!  We’ll show you the equipment we use to purify our products to insure that we filter out contaminants to a part-per-million level (that’s pretty clean, huh?), and you’ll have an opportunity to tour our cleanrooms and find out why the garb is called a “bunny suit   (Grade 10) Photos

March 8, 2008 – Do you want to use Real Science Equipment in Real Laboratories? Come join us in the Physiology, Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratories of Miramar College to experience methods using DNA and proteins to solve crimes and detect diseases   (Grades 10, 11) Photos

March 15, 2008 – Biotechnology workshop - including several hands-on molecular experiments. Come find out what is done at Gen-Probe.    (Grades 10,11,12)

March 15, 2008 – Southern California Regional Botball Competition at the University of San Diego. BE WiSE Botball team participating.

March 29, 2008 – Wilderness Writing Workshop - Explore the outdoors at the incredible Torrey Pines State Reserve. Get ready for rugged coastlines and the thrill of capturing beauty in words - your words! Bring a notebook and pen for creative and scientific writing led by Eco Expressions founder, Jan D. August 11–15, 2008 – Life Science Summer Experience at Miramar College (for girls who completed 9th or 10th grade in June 2007)
