Zoo Internquest
Brief Description: Program Description: The purpose of this program is to provide eight to ten high school students interested in pursuing careers in the life sciences (e.g., biology, zoology, human or veterinary medicine, wildlife management, etc.) with the opportunity to learn from Zoo experts. Students in this program will learn about such subjects as conservation, pathology, genetics, veterinary medicine, animal behavior, reproductive physiology, ecology, and more. They will also have the opportunity to visit behind-the-scenes areas at the Zoo and Wild Animal Park and meet researchers, veterinary staff, animal care managers/keepers, and trainers. The group will meet at the Zoo three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) from 2:30-5:30 p.m. over 12 weeks beginning November 1. Each intern will receive a $250.00 scholarship. Intern Obligations: Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the San Diego Zoo. Each intern will be responsible for attending all meetings as well as participating in our distance learning project using the Zoo. InternQuest Web site (computer skills are preferred). Journals may be written either on home computers or in the Zoo's Education Computer Lab, but Web pages will be composed in the Education Lab. Eligibility: á Interested students (grade 11 or 12) attending San Diego County schools. á Students must have a B average or better and have taken advanced science courses. Candidates must complete the application and obtain two appropriate letters of recommendation.
