Advanced Primatology

Brief Description:
Trace the evolutionary history of primates and the various ways they are adapted to their environments. Looking at the very first primates 65 million years ago to all of the various monkeys, apes, prosimians, and people alive today, students will be “monkeyin’ around” in Primate Hall, one of the four galleries in the Footsteps Through Time exhibit. See a full-size replica of Gigantopithecus, the largest primate ever (up to 10 feet tall!) that became extinct about half a million years ago. Learn what all primates have in common and what makes each primate species unique. Following the tour is a session in a Museum classroom using tools and methods of anthropology to measure primate bones, including skulls, to learn about primate adaptations. This workshop is recommended for grades 5 and up. Adaptable for adult groups.
