Superfund Basic Research Program (SBRP): Outreach Core
Brief Description: This program is a partnership between SBRP and two high schools (Sweetwater and Preuss) that connects research on Superfund toxics to the needs of community-based partners engaged in education and cross-border (U.S.-Mexico) regional development. The education partnership includes environmental science curriculum development and teacher training in two of San Diego's disadvantaged High Schools. Students from these partner schools are gaining direct experimental guidance in SBRP labs through a science-based internship program that focuses on waterborne toxicants. The regional development partnership (Regional Workbench Consortium, RWBC) links our efforts in education with a collaborative group of industry, government, non-profit, and university-based research organizations spanning the U.S.-Mexico border. The RWBC is building educational, planning and decision-support tools for integrating and sharing knowledge about basic biological, chemical, and physical aspects of Superfund toxicants.
