Aquatic Adventures Science Education Foundation (AASEF)

Address:   San Diego, California

Organization Profile:
WHAT IS AQUATIC ADVENTURES? Our Mission: Living Labs for Youth To provide educational programs that connect underserved youth to science, inspire environmental action, and increase exposure to marine habitats. Our Vision: Engage, Experience, Empower To engage youth in unique experiences that reveal new opportunities and engender valuable skills, empowering each individual to fulfill their potential. WHAT DOES AQUATIC ADVENTURES DO? Creates a Living Laboratory Aquatic Adventures facilitates four separate programs as well as large community events. Over 3000 underserved youth were reached through these programs last year. · Intensive Hands-on Learning opportunities are offered throughout the year. SEA Series, SEA Semester, and Summer Camps provide creative classroom labs and field trips to tide pools and wetlands, allowing students to explore the marine sciences. At the same time, they practice their reading and math skills in a way that truly engages them. · Mentoring programs recognize there are students who can make great strides in science, but have challenges at school or at home. Students Empowering Students teams these youth with high-school mentors who can provide them guidance and help build their self-esteem. The students and mentors participate in hands-on marine research, such as data collection, dissection, and experimentation. · Taking Action in our region's marine environments is the focus of large community events. Several times a year, hundreds of volunteers pick up trash bags and shovels, and head to one of San Diego's wetlands for an all day clean up effort. The "Wetland Avengers" learn about the delicate natural balance in salt marshes, while removing trash and non-native plants. Develops a Future Aquatic Adventures provides students that are traditionally underrepresented in science and technology, access to these fields through experiential learning. Youth gain skills to develop a stronger foundation for the future. Some of the measurable outcomes are as follows. · Knowledge of scientific terminology · Understanding of general scientific principles · Awareness of environmental issues · Accomplishment through cooperative learning · Development of environmental action tools · Leadership abilities · Improved study skills · Removal of barriers to learning · Growth in responsibility · Ability to swim and snorkel Builds Community Partnerships Aquatic Adventures has a growing and respected track record of strong community partnerships. The organization collaborates with San Diego City Schools, University of San Diego, San Diego River Coalition, AmeriCorps, Price Charities, and Sherman Heights Community Center. WHO ARE WE? Our Staff The Executive Director is a lecturer at the University of San Diego and founder of the organization. The staff consists of marine science students and graduates. All are highly dynamic role models with a passion for the sciences, the environment, and teaching.
