Student and Teacher Opportunities in Environmental Engineering at UCSD

Dear Teachers of San Diego,

We would like to draw your attention to a unique opportunity for your students to jump on the environmental sustainability train, which is moving ahead at full steam. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has created the Environmental Engineering major a few years ago in an effort to merge quantitative engineering skills with sensitivity to environmental issues. This website gives an overview of the program and ongoing research: http://www.mae.ucsd.edu/enveng.php

Our enrollment has more than doubled each of the past 2 years and we would like to continue to grow this major. We know that students with an interest in environmental issues are often the best students in your class. We are confident that we can provide them with a stimulating and competitive environment to learn the fundamentals and engineering principals required for a successful career in Clean Tech. Please do not hesitate to contact me or have your students call/email me directly. The application period for Fall 2009 will be in November 2008. There are some special opportunities for you to visit the campus coming up during Earthweek: http://earthweek.ucsd.edu/

I would also like to draw your attention to a program that helps mainly (but not exclusively) middle school teachers in implementing environmental education in the classroom. Training, tools, and stipends are provided. A weeklong workshop will be held June 23-28. Contact Ange Mason at amason@ucsd.edu or explore http://ties.ucsd.edu/ITEST
