The Scripps Research Institute is accepting applications for the following 2008 Student & Teacher Programs:

PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS:
The Science Partnership Scholars Program is a lecture and lab series on state-of-the-art research topics and techniques taught by TSRI doctoral candidates. Topics include Combinational Chemistry, Cells & Microscopy, DNA and Forensics and Drug Discovery. Teachers who successfully complete the program will receive a $400 classroom supplies budget and 2 credits through UCSD extension. (UCSD fees are covered by program.) Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2008.

The Summer Internship Program for Teachers places educators in a TSRI laboratory and emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis and interaction with laboratory personnel. Participants are paid $22.50/hour and also attend specially designed programs and field trips. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2008.

SMART Teams are teams of high school students and their teacher working with research scientists to design and construct physical models of the proteins that are being investigated in their laboratories. The primary goal of the SMART Team program is to connect high school students to the real world of science that exists in an active biomolecular research. Teachers are trained in the use of this modeling technology at a free National SMART Team Teacher Workshop in Milwaukee July 28- August 1, 2008. (Accommodations provided, up to $300 provided for travel.)

PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS:
The High School Student Research Education Program is an intensive hands-on laboratory research experience committed to increasing the number of students seeking higher education in the sciences, especially those from groups that are underrepresented. Participants attend weekly after school tutorials in the spring, a week-long unpaid training "boot-camp" and are paid to work in a laboratory for 7 weeks during the summer. Students are paired with mentors inside and outside of their labs and attend seminars, trips and other activities designed to broaden their knowledge of careers in the biosciences. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2008.
