The San Diego Archaeological Center is once again conducting “Artifact Interact, an Introduction to the Cultural Resources of the San Diego Region”. This three hour workshop will introduce participants to the complete 10,000 year human occupation of San Diego. Hands-on activities using actual artifacts from archaeological collections curated at the Center, as well as presentations in several media forms, will allow individuals to explore the exciting world of archaeology.
Initially developed for the San Dieguito River Park Docents, Artifact Interact is designed for scout leaders, nature trails guides, nature center interpreters, earth science educators and primary grade teachers interested in the cultural resources of San Diego County. Utilizing lessons from Project Archaeology’s Intrigue of the Past, Center educators will engage participants in the fundamentals, process and issues of archaeology. Included in this workshop is the opportunity to produce several types of experimental archaeological reproductions. Professional development training provides tools for educators to engage the general public, life-learners and the youngest citizens of San Diego in the scientific inquiry of archaeology.
Displays and exhibits promoting local archaeology including but not limited to “Rose Canyon, A Walk through San Diego history”, “Otay Mesa, A Cultural Landscape”, and “The Harris Site, San Diego’s Place in the Past” will be highlighted. It is a rare opportunity for the public to learn history from real artifacts representing 10,000 years of human existence in the vast San Diego region.
The Center is proud to be the regional administrator for Project Archaeology, a national heritage program. Project Archaeology reaches a very broad and diverse audience with a variety of learning skills. The Center has provided educational classes for thousands of students, teachers, and informal educators.
In order to assure a quality program, space is limited. Registration for this workshop is required. Center members, volunteers and interns are strongly encouraged to attend. A $25 material fee will be required from each attendee prior to the workshop. Light refreshments will be provided. Bring a lunch and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the San Pasqual Valley.
