Calling all Middle School Science Teachers – are you ready to lead the way in teaching and learning science?

MSSELI, Middle School Science Education Leadership Initiative, is a research-based, San Diego County-wide middle school professional learning community in it’s fourth year of inspiring, enhancing, and empowering teachers.

* Are you interested in engaging in professional dialogue about what it takes to effectively teach middle school science?

* Are you willing to open your classroom practice to other middle school teachers with the intent to focus on how students learn science?

* Do you have the desire to affect change, not only within yourself but within others as well?

* Are you a life-long learner, willing to implement research based innovations to improve teaching and learning?

Program Highlights:

* 1 week Summer Institute (Aug. 6-10) to immerse you in inquiry and build collegiality among middle school teachers county-wide.

* Technology Integration – become a “digital native” by learning and applying tools in technology that improve the quality of teaching and learning.

* Collaborative Lesson Study – work in grade level groups of teachers to collaboratively plan, teach, and analyze the effectiveness of elements of lessons.

* Teach with NSF recommended curricula provided by MSSELI – aligned to CA state standards, inquiry based, grounded in current pedagogical research.

* Learn to Lead the Way – MSSELI will help build your leadership skills by supporting you to develop goals that meet the specific needs of you and your site/district, and introducing you to effective strategies for working with stakeholders.

* Accepted applicants receive a $1500 stipend upon full completion of the program!


MSSELI is a three-year, professional commitment to a year round learning community. San Diego’s MSSELI is accepting on-line applications for teachers (prefer teams of 2) from school districts around San Diego County.

Summer Leadership Academy will be held at the San Diego County Office of Education, August 6-10, 2007 from 8:30am-3:30pm. Six additional days during the academic year, and a one-day technology training are also involved.
