First Annual Pollinator Awareness Week

From June 23-28th, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center will be hosting its First Annual Pollinator Awareness Week. This is a nationwide event that is being held all over the country during this week at various nature centers and similar venues. We will be hosting lectures and activities throughout the week to bring awareness to the crisis of the world’s pollinators, particularly with regards to the honeybees

The schedule of events for Pollinator Week is as follows:

Monday June 23, Wed June 25, Friday June 27 and Saturday June 28th from 10AM – 4PM - the Discovery Center will host pollinator-related activities for kids and adults.

Some of the pollinator activities we will offer throughout the week include:

• Caterpillar to butterfly metamorphosis
• Learn how to make honeycomb candles
• Continuous showing of “The Bee Movie”
• Butterfly DVDs
• Learn about special pollination adaptations
• Pollinator games and puzzles
• Face-painting for the kids
• Native garden pollinator tours
• Honey flavored ice cream from Haagen-Dazs

Special lectures and presentations during Pollinator Week include:

• Wednesday June 25th from 7pm – 8:30 pm – “Insects and Pollination” with Dr. Michael Klein, a local wildlife biologist who also teaches at the San Diego Natural History Museum: a free public lecture which will enlighten you about the important role that insects play in pollination and how plants and insects have evolved together to create this mutually supportive relationship
