Solar Primer Workshop, an introduction to teaching renewable energy for teachers and parents of grades 4-8, will take place on July 8, 2008 from 9:00 – 4:00.
Location: San Diego County Office of Education, Room 401 6401 Linda Vista Road, San Diego
The workshop includes presentations & activities using solar electric & solar heating technologies. The goal is to improve student energy literacy aligned with the California Science standards. The process is engaging, rigorous, and fun!
Participants will be engaged in:
* Using solar electric panels to power a variety of electrical appliances including: Music systems, Motors, model Cars, Art, Water fountains, smoothie carts, lighting, etc.
* Sizing solar electric systems to meet the energy demands of classroom electrical projects
* How to use solar electric cells to teach electricity
* Buidling solar cookers which concentrate the energy of the sun: relevant science principles include radiation, conduction, convection, insulation, energy transformation, greenhouse effect, reflection and absorption
* Using solar energy to distill and pasteurize water
Participating teachers who commit to showcasing student work at the High Tech Fair, March 2009 will receive: Your Solar Home (guidebook, DVD, poster), Solar Decathlon (book/DVD) All Participants will receive solar posters, solar cooker (you build), and a solar powered whirlygig (you build)
