May TeacherTECH Science Series - Simple Environmental Measurement Devices

San Diego County Middle and High School Teachers are invited to attend our May TeacherTECH Science Series in collaboration with the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering. The workshop will focus on what kind of information can be obtained through the use of simple environmental measurement devices and how this information can teach and inspire your students.

Thursday, May 22, 2008
4:30pm - 6:30pm
San Diego Supercomputer Center
Room 279
University of California, San Diego

Workshop Description:
Environmental measurements have seen a renaissance as the impact of climate change on our environment needs to be documented. Measurements are also immensely useful in conveying knowledge to K-12 students as they catalyze learning through hands-on activities, creative thinking, and hypothesis testing.

In this workshop, we will demonstrate easy-to-use yet powerful tools for middle and high school teacher classroom use. The Vernier hand-held data logger and data analyzer will be presented with different sensors for temperature, light, UV radiation, and water quality measurements.

In the application part of the workshop, we will discuss two lesson plans that demonstrate how the temperature of different materials responds to exposure to sunlight. First we will measure temperature of different fabrics from white to black and discuss impact on choice of clothes. Then we will measure the temperature of roof shingles with different colors and coatings and discuss applications to building heating and cooling and greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, we will demonstrate a powerful tool to display and share environmental data.

Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Dr. Jan Kleissl, UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering and Jeff Sale, San Diego Supercomputer Center.

Registration is free. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at 858-534-5064 or amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.
