OPERATION BALBOA
Interested in getting your middle school or high school classroom involved in a San Diego-wide science project?
We are pleased to announce the launch of Operation Balboa, an exciting new science project in partnership with the High Tech High and the UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society, generously funded by the Oceans and Beyond Education Foundation (Kimmich Family). All middle and high school science teachers and their classes are invited to participate in this fun, easy to implement, hands-on learning experience!
What is Operation Balboa? Operation Balboa will engage the Greater San Diego High Schools to create the world's largest version of the classic board game OPERATION. The human body will be divided into 200 pizza box sized sections and each participating high school will create a highly detailed OPERATION style game of that section of the body either at the anatomical or cellular level. In addition to the surgical removal of specific body parts, the students will be encouraged to dream about potential new implantable "bionic" parts to incorporate. On April 4th, 2009, we will put all 200 pieces together at the San Diego Science Festival Expo Weekend in Balboa Park where it will be on display for 15,000 viewers including over 200 leading science organizations in San Diego. This could be the largest Operation game in history and may even end up on the Guinness Book of World Records!
Benefits of participation:
-Teacher Training Session: ALL the necessary training on how to build the board game and how to organize the project in the classroom will be provided, no experience in circuits and bioengineering required! You receive a $150 stipend for attending the training session.
-Project is fully funded: You will receive a set of all necessary supplies for completing 20 projects plus an additional stipend for artistic creativity
-Support from trained UCSD undergraduate volunteers: 2 in-class visits and continuous assistance through e-mail communication from some of the nation's top bioengineering students
What your students will get:
-An engaging learning experience where students are challenged to think 'out-of-the-box'
-UCSD Bioengineering students to assist students brainstorm and design their project
- A culminating public showcase on April 4, 2009, highlighting all projects and participating classes during the San Diego Science Festival
-Awards given to the top projects in the county!
Who can participate? Any middle school or high school science class can participate.
What is the timeline to complete the projects? Teacher Training Session: Saturday, November 15th, 2008 In-Class Support from Bioengineering students: October 2008 through February 2009 (specific in-class visitation times are set up between you and the students) Projects Due: March 15th, 2009 Exhibition Date: April 4th, 2009
What am I committing to by agreeing to participate? You must attend the training session to participate in Operation Balboa. By attending the training session you commit to delivering 20 high quality student produced game boards by March 15th, 2009.
