BioBridge Call for Proposals - Apply now for a $300 grant to showcase what interests YOU about science for the 1st San Diego Science Festival

Call for Proposals – High Schools in San Diego Area

Apply now for a $300 grant to showcase what interests YOU about science for the 1st San Diego Science Festival

Involve your school in the creativity and development of San Diego ’s exciting Science Festival (SDSF) www.sdsciencefestival.com in spring, 2008. The Festival is a grassroots community effort driven by a Who’s Who of scientists and science organizations, including major universities, leading research institutions, cutting-edge technology producing companies, museums, community outreach organizations and student groups. Endorsed by Nobel Laureates, university chancellors and presidents, corporate CEOs, and K-12 teachers and administrators, the Festival has already recruited more sponsors than existing festivals held by MIT and Harvard , New York , and cities in Europe , which attract between 50,000 to 1 million participants.

The San Diego Science Festival has reserved 25 exhibition spaces during its Expo in Balboa Park capstone event on Saturday, April 4th for high school students to demonstrate to the public what excites them about science. At least 25 successful high school teams will receive a $300 grant from UCSD’s BioBridge Program to cover supplies for their project. Applicants wishing to receive a grant should be sure to address the following concerns for their presentations:

- Is the display/activity hands-on and interactive?

- Does the activity clearly communicate any of the following ideas: how science impacts our lives, why science is “cool,” science and our future; what science means to each of us?

- Does the activity involve a reasonable amount of student participation from your site?

- How effectively will funds be spent for the proposed presentation?

- Are local community collaborators involved? (Groups are welcome to contact BioBridge staff to facilitate such communication if none are now in place.)

See http://www.sdsciencefestival.com/htmls/2009festival/expow.htm for current Expo programs for reference. All groups will to be strongly encouraged to videotape their process to post on the Festival Web site for future years
