EVENT: San Diego Archaeological Center Public Archaeology Day Open House DATES: Saturday, September 13, 2008 10am-2pm LOCATION: San Diego Archaeological Center 16666 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido, CA 92027
Escondido, CA - The San Diego Archaeological Center is preparing for an exciting Public Archaeology Day, Saturday, September 13, 2008, 10am-2pm. During this Open House event, the Center’s Education Department will provide a sampling of archaeology-based learning experiences based on the nationally renowned Project Archaeology Program. Project Archaeology uses the basic concepts of real field archaeology to fulfill multidisciplinary state education standards. The lessons employ actual artifacts and your child’s imagination to hone critical thinking skills in a fun and challenging environment. Experience what it is like to be a “real” archaeologist, trowel not included.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to view Power Point presentations in the Center’s newly renovated Culture Classroom. A $7,100 grant from Las Patronas funded the acquisition of a mounted LCD Projector with electric wall screen and podium with sound system. According to Center Director, Cindy Stankowski “This grant will dramatically increase our ability to improve and expand our school and public presentations that focus on the field and science of archaeology.
The Center has provided Project Archaeology programs to over 17,000 students in the past six years for public, private, charter, magnet, Montessori, GATE, AVID, and home schooled students. Center Program Coordinator Annemarie Cox and Collection Specialists Suzanne Moramarco and Rebecca Nathan are trained providers of this unique heritage program.
Professional and informal educators will enjoy learning about this program and how it can fulfill their education plans and content standards in the coming school year. Scout leaders, museum and historic house docents, nature trail guides and earth science educators are also encouraged to attend.
Educators who schedule Project Archaeology programs at this event will receive a Project Archaeology logo item at the time of the field trip.
Admission to this event is free to Center members. A $5 donation is requested for non-members, $10 maximum for families. The donation includes admission to the Museum. For more information on this event please contact Annemarie Cox via email at acox@sandiegoarchaeology.org or by phone: (760) 291-0370. The San Diego Archaeological Center was created in 1993 to provide an archaeological curation facility for the San Diego Region. The Center was the first nonprofit organization in the nation dedicated solely to curating and sharing archaeological collections with the public. Planning is underway to create a spacious and light-filled lobby, enhanced exhibition space, classroom, library and research areas. A new entryway will feature native plant landscaping designed to promote conservation, outdoor exhibit and seating areas, water elements and improved signage to promote the Center as a regional tourist destination.
The Mission of The San Diego Archaeological Center is “to preserve archaeological collections and promote their educational, scientific and cultural use to benefit a diverse public.”
